The Seaforth Heiress: Lady of the Last Prophecy

by Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard

I first learned of Mary Mackenzie, daughter of Lord and Lady Seaforth, while researching the legendary Brahan Seer, a 17th century laborer on the Highland estate of the Seaforth chieftains of Clan Mackenzie. He became known for his gift of the Second Sight and, even today, is often called “the Celtic version of Nostradamus.” His last prophecy, before being executed for sorcery by one of Mary Mackenzie’s ancestors, provided a detailed account of the tragic ruin of the Mackenzies of Seaforth. The Seer described many signs that would portend that his prophecy was about to be fulfilled. I began to think about how living under the dark cloud of such a prophecy might affect young Mary Mackenzie. It was only after I began reading about Mary and her family that I discovered something remarkable: Mary was the only woman ever to become chief of Clan Mackenzie. Her story captivated me, as I hope it will captivate you!
