Elizabeth Hutchison Bernard Author of Award-Winning Historical Fiction

Writing Historical Fiction: Author-to-Author Chat

Had great fun fielding questions from author Debbie Wastling in this lively interview about planning, researching and writing historical fiction.

If you’re not already familiar with my historical novels, here’s some information about them, the old and the new. While my last two novels share a Scottish Highlands theme, I enjoy writing historical fiction as diverse as an Edwardian-era cosmetic surgery murder mystery (yes, they were doing cosmetic surgery back then!) and a heartfelt saga of New York’s ragtime musicians at the turn of the twentieth century.

I am so excited about the upcoming release of The Seaforth Heiress: Lady of the Last Prophecy, Book 2 of my Historic Women of the Highlands series. It will be coming out on July 25th, just in time for some serious beach reading! It follows Book 1, Sisters of Castle Leod, but both are standalone novels with completely different characters and stories that take place a century apart.

Book 1 of Historic Women of the Highlands, an Amazon Kindle #1 Bestseller

Book 2 of Historic Women of the Highlands

A century-old curse shadows the woman destined to be Clan Mackenzie’s only female chief.

The family of Lord Francis Seaforth lives under the shadow of a dark prophecy. Over a century ago, Coinneach Odhar, known as the Brahan Seer, foresaw the demise of the Seaforth line. There is little doubt among Scottish Highlanders that the end of the dynasty is drawing near. As a series of tragedies unfolds, eldest daughter Mary must confront a growing fear that the dire prophecy of her family’s ruin is indeed coming to pass, and she may become the prophet’s final messenger of death.

“A fantastic work of historical fiction. If I could have scored it higher than five stars, I would have.” –ReaderViews.com

A bone-chilling historical suspense-thriller set in Edwardian-era New York City. A young woman aspiring to become a physician is faced with insurmountable obstacles, until a charming and ambitious “beauty doctor” offers her a position as his assistant. Drawn into a dangerous web of deception and intrigue, she begins to fear for the lives of their patients. And perhaps her own.

“Could not put the book down. Great idea for your next Book Club reading.”THE HOLLYWOOD TIMES

May Convery is unhappy with her family’s privileged life among New York City’s elite and dreams of becoming a poet. When she meets the poor but talented Mike Bernard, an aspiring concert pianist, she imagines the two of them pursuing their artistic passions together. But after their secret liaison is discovered and Mike disappears from her life, neither of them is prepared for the consequences of his betrayal. From vaudeville’s greatest stars to the geniuses of early African-American musical theater, an unforgettable cast of real-life characters populates this richly fictionalized historical saga.
